Rained out!

Before I even begin about today I wanted to say that I miss my Cay Cay so very much!  Mommy can't wait to see you baby!

Today we planned to drive an hour to the town of Tasch, to take the train to Zermatt.  When we got up this morning it was a little overcast, but we hoped it would clear later in the morning as it has a couple of other days.  So we got our backpack packed, and headed out to the Coop store to get some breakfast.  Birchermuseli and fresh baked bread was breakfast for today.

We got to the train station and parked the car, got our tickets and waited for the train.  As we were waiting, I saw a vending machine similar to one I had seen in Lauterbrunnen.  I wanted to take a picture of the one in Lauterbrunnen but didn't have my camera with me so I was happy to see that this vending machine contained the same items that the other did....especially the "Maybe Baby" pregnancy test, right next to the party sticks and the cigarettes!  I don't know why, but I found this to be hilarious, and was glad to get the picture to share with you all.  Ever seen a pregnancy test in a vending machine?  Me either.

The train ride to Zermatt was about 15 minutes.  When we got there it was still very overcast and clouds covered the surrounding mountains.  It was also only around 60 degrees and breezy, so we put on our sweatshirts and made our way into the town.  It is a car-free mountain town, and is mostly homes, hotels/chalets, shops, bakeries and restaurants.  We wandered through the main stretch which is no more than a quarter of a mile, went into some of the stores and shops, and then went to the are of town where you SHOULD be able to see the Matterhorn.  Still cloudy!  So we decided to go see the church in town that was very old and beautiful.  While we were inside it started to rain quite a bit so we sat in the church for a while, waiting out the rain.  When the rain slowed down we decided to go back outside and walked around the town for a while longer, hoping that eventually the clouds would pass and we could see the mountain.

The remainder of our day went something like this....Walk around....eat some snacks by the river.....walk some more.....eat a 6.50 quarter pounder at the McDonalds.....Sit and watch some kids get tennis lessons....walk into every shop at least once, many twice....eat a chocolate eclair....walk around....and finally, we decided that it wasn't going to happen.  It had either been cloudy, or rained the entire time we were there, which was from around 10:30 AM-3:30 PM.  Stupid weather!

We took the train back to Tasch, and then started back to our hotel in search of pizza.  We ended up at a Pizzeria in Visp, and had some DELICIOUS pizza, salad and the best bread I have ever tasted...no joke!  The chef and waitresses only spoke Italian (we are very close to Italy so this area has many Italian speakers) and the fact that we wanted "tap water" got lost in translation and we ended up with 5.00 "gassy water"....why anyone would pay that much to drink carbonated mineral water is beyond me.  We did it by accident, but that is what a lot of the folks around here drink by choice!

So that is basically our day.  Sorry, not much excitement (Except for the "Maybe Baby").  Tomorrow we head to an area called Faido.  Here are our pictures from today:

I didn't take this picture, it is from the internet, posted by some other lucky person who actually got to see the matterhorn.  This is what we were hoping to see!

Care for a soda, some party sticks or perhaps a "Maybe Baby?"

Me on the train up to Zermatt

Zermatt bread!
The church steeple.  The more modern building out in front is a hotel.

Some beautiful flowers and cross in front of one of the chalets.

Noah's arc depiction on the ceiling of the church.

Jared on the bridge, and the Matterhorn covered by clouds.  Booo!
If you can't see the mountain, you may as well eat an eclair.  It was delicious!

Me in front of an old building.

There is a cemetary outside of the church, and one section is dedicated to mountaineers that lost their lives climbing.  Most of the headstones tell you which mountain each person was climbing.

Great pizza!  We have had pizza twice on this trip and they give you this oil (jar on left) which I assume is olive oil with spicy peppers in it to put on your pizza.  I must say it is realllly good!
